ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has published its consolidated subnational revenue report for the first three quarters of 2026, revealing that internally generated revenue (IGR) across 21 participating states climbed by 27.4% to ₦1.89 trillion.
The surge was spearheaded by Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Kaduna, and Edo states, which fully transitioned land use charges, motor vehicle licensing, and informal retail levies onto integrated digital billing switches linked to national biometric identity numbers (NIN).
Executive Secretary of the JTB Olusegun Adesokan highlighted that eliminating physical cash collections by informal revenue contractors plugged massive leakages that previously diverted public funds.
The expanded fiscal space has enabled subnational administrations to boost domestic counterpart funding for primary healthcare, rural road paving, and teacher training without expanding commercial bank overdrafts.
