DAKAR, SENEGAL — The 9th West African Hotel Investment Conference (WAHIC) has concluded in Dakar, with major international hospitality operators—including Marriott, Radisson, and Accor—announcing a pipeline of 14,000 new business-class hotel rooms across Dakar, Abidjan, Accra, and Lagos before the end of 2028.
The aggressive hotel building boom is propelled by unprecedented demand for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) facilities linked to West Africa's expanding offshore oil and gas developments, mining summits, and AfCFTA trade negotiations.
Developers reported that business hotels in Abidjan and Dakar recorded average revenue per available room (RevPAR) growth of 18.4% over the past twelve months, outperforming hotel markets in Southern Africa and Europe.
The summit highlighted the urgent need to expand domestic culinary training institutes and hospitality apprenticeships to ensure that executive chef and general manager positions are staffed by qualified West African professionals.
